The 2023 Rundown

With 2022 behind us and the thought of spring and summer around the corner, here is a rundown of everything you can expect from the year ahead on Tresco

It has been a cold, crisp and quiet winter, and the island and its residents are ready to come out of hibernation. We have a fantastic year of events ahead. Whether you’re an ornithologist or a music lover, whether you fancy a spot of yoga or a wander across the sand at low tide, we’ve got the goods for you.

The year is being kicked off by local island yogi Gem Hansen and The Restorative Retreat. The perfect time to reflect and heal, Gem’s yoga sessions will allow participants to reflect on the winter and look forward to the spring to come.

The season officially begins in March, and the calendar is littered with wonderful opportunities. Meet Kate Lawson in the Abbey veg garden, learn about the Tresco bees and the honey that goes into SC dogs' rum, and join yogi Esmée Halliday for The Sacred Self Retreat.

Later in the month, you can brave the cold and walk to Bryher at low tide: there will even be someone in the channel to greet you with a hot chocolate at Elevenses! With more yoga from Gem on offer and the first Makers' Market of the season, we’ll quickly get into the season spirit.

As Easter comes around, so too does music at the New Inn. Familiar face Ben Waters will be tickling the ivories, Will Wagstaff will be touring the island in search of flora and fauna and you can discover your inner artist for Paint the Day.

With the Walk Scilly Festival on offer, April is sure to celebrate life, growth and all things Spring. By the 20th - with the sun hopefully shining down on us! - it is time for the Low Tide Event.

Lucy Aldridge will be paying us a visit and running a yoga retreat, and then - to end the month in style - we shall be rowing in, spectating and celebrating the World Pilot Gig Championships!

As we become familiar with warmer climes once more, you can experience more walks from Will Wagstaff, extreme sport with the first Scilly 60, and more makers markets.

May is also the month of festivals, with Creative Scilly back once again and the Festival of Nature returning to our shores (more information coming soon), both of which guarantee fun for all the family with unique insights into Scillonian life. We then round off with the Scilly Folk festival, which means more fab music across the islands and at the New Inn!

The summer months also promise their fair share of comings and goings! Paint the Day, Will Wagstaff and the Island makers and their markets are back, and then we will be hearing from musician Izzy Drake at the New Inn.

The Tresco Fete is on 23rd July and promises games, music, food and drink, and then we will hear from both Tom Rotherham and Seth Lakeman at the New Inn.

In August, the Festival Players return to the Abbey Garden and will be performing Twelfth Night - it will certainly be a memorable night. For music fans, we are lucky enough to hear from Ben Waters again at the end of the month.

As the summer holidays end and the island starts to prepare for Autumn, we can expect another low tide event on the 1st complete with entertainment from Fabulous 59 Ford. What’s more, the makers are back with a market and Will with a walk! On the 15th, the islands host the 10-day-long Taste of Scilly Festival, with local delicacies from across the archipelago.

When the days eventually grow shorter, and the leaves start turning orange, we can expect the last of the markets, nature walks and walkable tides. Lucy Aldridge will also be returning for another yoga retreat, and - thanks to the success of the last two years - the swim retreat is set to go again, too: good luck to those who want to brave the sea!

It is sure to be a year of fantastic island opportunities, and we cannot wait to get stuck in. Whether it's low tide events, island walks or theatre in the gardens, we shall see you there...
