Gallery Tresco

The finest art gallery on the Isles of Scilly nestles on the shoreline of New Grimsby harbour, Tresco. This converted pilot gig shed now hosts art by some of Cornwall's most established artists, as well as a selection of unique giftware inspired by the islands.

Since opening its doors over 20 years ago, the gallery has hosted successful exhibitions featuring paintings from some of Cornwall’s most established artists - Tom Rickman, Paul Lewin, Wendy McBride, Neil Pinkett, Gary Long, and Amanda Hoskin to name but a few.

The line-up for our 2019 schedule is no less impressive with the addition of West Country artist Jeremy Gardiner, Cornish painter Saul Cathcart and new local artist Morag Law from St Martin’s. The full timetable of nine shows can be viewed below.

Of particular note is the Creative Scilly Festival Show on the 18th May which is part of a ten day art extravaganza taking place across the islands, including for the first time on Tresco, the Paint the Day project on the 11th of May. Open to all, the resulting Tresco paintings will be exhibited in the gallery on 12th of May when they will be judged by artist Paul Lewin with prizes awarded for both the adult’s and children’s categories.

The gallery is open throughout the main season, and out of season giftware can be purchased by contacting us on +44 (0)1720 424925 or emailing us. You can also follow us on Facebook.

We look forward to welcoming you.

The Tresco Art Collection

Tresco boasts a wealth of artworks outside of the gallery setting such as the sculptures in Smith Square and on the lawn in front of the Flying Boat Bar & Bistro.

A permanent exhibition of metal sculpture by Tom Leaper sits within The Tresco Abbey Garden, some located in prime positions such as the Leaping Fish on the small Pool and the Agave Fountain below the Shell House, others are secreted away within the old Abbey Ruins.

The contemporary shapes sit comfortably within the nature of the garden: the setting creates an ideal opportunity for the viewer to stop and engage with the work.

Another art feature within the Abbey Garden is the Shell House, lovingly decorated in a shell and garden theme mosaic by Lucy Dorrien-Smith. Her talents can also been seen at Tresco School where she inspired and actively encouraged the children to decorate the exterior wall and entranceway.

Ceramic artist Adrian Brough was enlisted to design and lay the tile flooring of the Shell House and was commissioned to tile the backdrop of the pizza oven in the Ruin Beach Café. And finally, local artist Richard Pearce has painted the view across Old Grimsby with the resulting large piece being permanently on display outdoors, exactly where it was drawn.

If you are planning to visit the islands you may want to spend time viewing the Tresco Art Collection including works by Alfred Wallis and Harold Harvey at the Flying Boat Bar & Bistro and on Bryher you can see paintings by Patrick Heron, Dame Laura Knight and Julian Trevelyan at the Hell Bay Hotel.

It is a rare opportunity to find such a noteworthy collection made so accessible to the public. The Collection continues throughout Tresco where original works from artists such as Fred Yates, Rose Hilton, John Miller, Mary Fedden, Kurt Jackson, Patrick Heron and Anthony Frost can be seen in the cottages – a unique feature in a holiday home.
