A special trip to the island farm
Our Tresco & Bryher school children went on a special school trip to the island market garden last week where they have their very own vegetable patch
When Ruth and Graham Eggins moved over to Tresco to take on the island farm, it was instantly made clear that engaging the community was at the top of the to do list. Stood in an empty field that was yet to hold beds, veg or produce, Ruth's eyes sparkled with talks of guided tours, information boards and sessions with the school children in and amongst the market garden.
Less than a year later, Ruth is a woman of her word and the Tresco and Bryher school children have been regular visitors to the farm. Earlier on in the season, they planted some vegetable seeds in their very own patch on the farm and Ruth has been taking care of them ever since. Last week, they paid the patch a visit to check up on progress and were very pleased with the results!
"Ruth has kindly looked after our tiny seedlings," says school teacher Abi Meaton "and we were all astonished by how much everything had grown. We picked courgettes and beetroot and it was a bit like the story of 'The Enormous Turnip' except it was 'The Enormous Beetroot!'"
"The children also dug up carrots and picked pea pods and then they created some beautiful suncatchers and collected eggs from the hens. The last treat was some delicious honey from Jilly and her bees. A huge thank you to Ruth, Jilly and Emma for your help."
We are sure the children will continue to visit the farm over the coming years and we hope it inspires them when it comes to striving for self sufficiency.
