A week on Tresco

Discovering the Island at a Different Time of Year; St Mary's islander Ellen describes how you can experience October on Tresco...

There is no single way to do Tresco. Beyond its familiar landmarks and much-loved highlights, the island reveals something different to every visitor. From wet and windy coastal walks and unhurried lunches to evenings spent gathered together for family games. Some of the most memorable moments can be found away from the usual itinerary. Here are a few ways to experience Tresco differently. Beyond the sun-soaked beaches and familiar summer scenes, the shoulder season offers its own special charm. Inspired by my own time as a guest on the island, here are some of the ways you can do Tresco a little differently.

As summer draws to a close, Tresco takes on a different rhythm, with autumn bringing its own character to the Island. Away from the bustle of the summer months, autumn on Tresco offers the time to slow down to a gentler pace, whether that means wrapping up for a walk along the cooler beaches, taking a dip in the pools or gathering around the table for a comforting meal with the family.

One of the easiest ways to settle into Tresco is to embrace island life, so there is no need to rush into starting your holiday. Allow your arrival to Tresco to unfold naturally; take a leisurely walk, explore the island in your own time, or simply sit and take in your surroundings. Sometimes the best way to begin a week on Tresco is by having nowhere in particular to be.

Bike hire is the perfect way to explore the island, with beaches, lanes and landmarks in every direction, cycling allows you to adventure without feeling hurried. Take the longer route, soak up your environment and stop off wherever you fancy. Whether that is a beach you have yet to explore, or a favourite view worth returning to, cycling makes it easy to see Tresco at your own speed, and from a different perspective.

Swimming on Tresco offers something for everyone. From the warmth of the indoor pools and facilities to a refreshing plunge in the surrounding sea. For those feeling brave enough to face the cooler waters, Blockhouse Beach is a perfect spot for a sea swim with higher tides. With an added reward of returning to the comfort of the pools and jacuzzi at The Sea Gardens Spa. An exhilarating contrast, worth experiencing during your stay.

One of the most memorable experiences on Tresco is a bracing walk along North End, taking in the rugged headland and the ever-changing sea views. Particularly as autumn sets in, the environment takes on a wilder feel, with Atlantic winds and crashing waves adding to the atmosphere. Wrap up warm, take your time along the coast and enjoy a different side of Tresco, where the landscape feels a world away from the calmer summer days.

Dining out is a great way to enjoy your Tresco stay, with each restaurant and cafe having their own completely different atmosphere and approach to island dining. Whether it is a relaxed lunch after a morning exploring, a coffee catch-up with some friends or family, or a long evening meal, there is plenty of choice throughout your stay. The Ruin Beach Cafe is a particular favourite for its coastal setting and its Mediterranean-inspired dishes, while The New Inn offers a welcoming spot for hearty food and drink after a day out on the island. For something a little different, The Garden Cafe and Shop is a perfect place to pause for some light refreshments while visiting the gardens.

When it is time to unwind in your Tresco cottage, an evening of board games and cards offers a lovely way to spend your evenings together as a family. With games provided in every cottage, there is no need to plan; simply settle in, gather around the table and enjoy a little friendly competition. After a day exploring what the island has on offer, these quieter evenings can be some of the most memorable parts of your stay, creating time to reconnect and enjoy spending time together.

The Abbey Gardens is well worth a visit at any time of year, but autumn offers a different perspective on the remarkable collection of subtropical plants. Immerse yourself in the intricate terraces of the garden, explore beyond familiar corners, look out for the plants and flowers that catch your eye and enjoy the lush planting against the changing autumn lighting. A visit to the garden is a reminder that Tresco has plenty to offer, even after the summer crowds have departed.
