Paul Lewin

I have been visiting Scilly and in particular, Tresco, for the best part of thirty years now, painting on the island almost every year, sometimes twice a year. This continuing relationship has led to a large body of work and an ingrained knowledge that has no equivalent with anywhere else for me. Each time I step off the boat I wonder whether I will be able to find the renewed inspiration that is needed for making a successful painting and it only takes a few hours and a walk with a sketchbook to find my answer, “Yes, of course!” Much of my time when on Tresco is spent exploring the familiar in hope of finding the new. I am always drawing, looking at the landscape from new angles, searching for a glimpse of an exciting composition. Sketches and notes are made on the spot and then I will return with my full kit of paints and mixed media, hoping to capture something of the enormity of the landscape that is before me. I try to finish my paintings in one sitting when outside because experience has told me that the weather cannot be trusted to repeat itself!
