World Pilot Gig Championships
A spectacular sight on the water, as over a hundred Cornish pilot gigs gather from across the globe, each crew vying for the title of champion.
Each May Day bank holiday, the islands play host to something rather special as the World Pilot Gig Championships bring a quiet swell of energy to the surrounding seas.
A living echo of the Cornish gigs that once raced to secure pilotage fees and save lives from shipwrecks (and indulged in the odd bit of 'free trade), the spirit remains unchanged. Today, they race for sport, but the scale is striking – a start line stretching for over a mile.
Since its beginnings in 1990, when only a handful of Cornish crews gathered, the event has grown into a remarkable spectacle, drawing competitors from across the South West and far beyond, all bound by a shared connection to sea and tradition.
From Tresco, the experience is beautifully balanced – close enough to step into the rhythm of it all on St Mary’s, yet always easy to return to a quieter, more restful pace.
