We remember them
For a small island, Tresco has a rich history and as we commemorate Remembrance Day, we are reminded of our past
If you have taken a walk along the coast from New Grimsby to the castles, you may well have passed a small plaque. This marker commemorates Tresco's role in World War II and it seems appropriate to remember these events today on Remembrance Day.
Between April of 1942 and October of 1943, a secret naval unit was based at New Grimsby sound. Like something out of a novel, British vessels were disguised as unassuming French fishing boats to journey across the enemy waters off the coast of Brittany without a trace. These same boats ferried allied agents, important information and equipment to and from France under German occupation. They played a huge part in the war effort.
Thanks to the intelligence required from these journeys the D-Day invasion could be planned. One agent who played a direct part in this mission was named Daniel Lomenech and he smuggled out the detailed plans of German defences.
This New Grimsby-based unit was kept a secret until 1995 under the Official Secrets Act. Therefore, it is essential that we make up for the decades of secret bravery and success and remember the operation today.
We remember them.
