Giving back: why we are Plover Lovers
The beautiful Ringed-Plover is under threat and - guided by the Wildlife Trust - we are determined to help keep the species breeding on Scilly
The Isles of Scilly is rich in wildlife. The unique climate, the absence of pollution and our positioning in the midst of the Atlantic Ocean mean that many species of flora and fauna thrive here - many of which are rarely seen in other parts of the UK.
One species that should not be overlooked is the small but mighty Ringed Plover. This small wading bird nests around the coast, flooded gravel pits and reservoirs. It is a resident species in the UK although Ringed Plovers also nest as far away as Greenland and Canada and fly through the UK on migration.
This iconic bird of spring and summer beaches has gone extinct everywhere else in Cornwall and, today, the next closest breeding location to the Isles of Scilly is 170 miles away in Dorset.
"Scilly is the last chance for breeding Ringed Plovers in the far south-west," says the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust. "This iconic summertime bird is very territorial and sensitive to disturbance at their nesting sites, with adults leaving the nest to try and lure potential threats away from their eggs and chicks. The best thing beach-goers can do at this wonderful time of year, is appreciate these stunning little birds from a distance. It’s going to take our whole community to rescue our breeding Ringed Plover population. With your help, together we can protect our Plovers and make sure this familiar shoreline bird doesn’t become a distant summertime memory."
"Whilst Scilly is famous for its plethora of breeding seabirds, from Manx Shearwaters to Storm Petrels, the Ringed Plover should not be overlooked. These special little waders are struggling nationally, and so we are incredibly lucky that they are finding success on our shores." Sarita Whitehead, Ringed Plover Conservation Officer
If you are visiting the Tresco shores this summer, be sure to keep an eye out for potential Plover nests and if you spot them, do keep your distance!
