Autumn Tide ceramics
During Autumn Tide Festival, island potter Fiona's studio was busy!
Island potter Fiona Hufton has a studio on New Grimsby quay and throughout Autumn Tide Festival it was full of life.
In the run up to the festival, she made 23 beautiful pint tankards and almost all of them have sold (if you want to get your hands on one there are just a few left at The New Inn!)
Fiona also held two open studios throughout the week-long event and, whilst she talked through her process and craft, visitors to her space scratched sgraffito designs into some of the pots she had made. She recently fired these pots in the kiln and the results are brilliant.
"Autumn Tide Festival offered me a chance to open Tresco Pottery studio on New Grimsby Quay and for visitors to see where and how my pots are made. I threw some pots on the wheel whilst chatting and explaining techniques.
Having introduced new sgraffito designs to my range of pots this year, I thought it might be fun to let people have a go for themselves. It was interesting for me to watch people hesitate before making that first mark on the fresh surface, with the awareness that once you have scored through the colour to the white clay beneath, it is there to stay.
Confidence grew, designs considered, some giggles, some serious concentration and the results are here, now permanently captured. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did."
Thank you to everyone who got involved!
