Walk Between Tresco & Bryher

The islands of Tresco and Bryher may be very close neighbours - the channel between them is just 250 yards or so at the narrowest point - but nevertheless they enjoy very separate identities.

However, every so often, extreme Spring Tides mean the watery barrier between the two islands falls away for a few precious hours, giving a unique opportunity to walk across and sample the delights of another island.

Below are the dates, times and heights of low tides when walking between Tresco and Bryher should be possible. Broadly speaking, the best route is to leave Flood Hatch beach, head roughly towards Samson, follow the sand bars out to the middle of the channel, and then head toward Church Quay on Bryher. You might get wet ankles or possibly knees; if you find yourself getting wetter than that, it might be worth checking you're on the right route!

Our Harbourmaster has some wise words of advice for those walking between Tresco and Bryher. These include wearing appropriate footwear, never walking in fog, always telling someone what you are doing, and checking tide times and the weather forecast (tide heights can vary with weather conditions and air pressure). Never attempt to walk back more than half an hour after low tide - wait and take a boat home.
