The Islands’ Regatta
Join us for Scilly's inaugural Islands' Regatta, including a parade of sail, Red Arrows display, round the island race, an ale festival and activities on, in and around the water!
Over the bank holiday weekend from Friday 26th to Monday 29th August 2016 the Isles of Scilly will host the very first Islands' Regatta, organised by Visit Isles of Scilly to celebrate the unique maritime heritage and culture of these beautiful islands.
A whole host of activities will take place throughout the weekend on, in and around the water, and you can find out more detail about what's happening each day below.
Tresco Boat Services will be providing a full boating schedule throughout the weekend to allow you to take full advantage of everything on offer throughout the islands.
The bank holiday weekend also sees the Summer Ale Festival at The New Inn on Tresco, to help quench your thirst after a day on the water!
Day Sails Throughout the Weekend
Sailing charity Turn to Starboard will have two of its vessels on Tresco throughout the weekend; the stunning 91 foot wooden gaff rigged tall ship Spirit of Falmouth and the 47 foot cruising Ketch, September of London.
Throughout the weekend, guests can join a Day Sail experience with Turn to Starboard aboard one of their vessels. An experienced Skipper and crew will sail you around the crystal waters of the Isles of Scilly. Take in the breathtaking view, join the crew sailing, or simply kick back and relax.
At the same time as enjoying a wonderful experience, you'll also be helping the charity in its mission to use RYA sailing courses to support Armed Forces personnel that have been affected by military operations, supporting these individuals on a positive path for their future through sail training.
Friday 26th August
On Friday, Scilly welcomes the flotilla of classic boats as they arrive on the islands from Falmouth.
From Tresco the best vantage points will be from the south of the island - including Carn Near, Appletree Banks and Pentle Bay. The flotilla's arrival is weather dependent but we estimate the vessels will arrive between 4.30pm and 7pm.
The Isles of Scilly Museum on St Mary's will be hosting a dedicated maritime exhibition throughout the weekend. The museum will be open today from 10am - 4:30pm.
Friday night also sees the local Gig Race taking place, with mixed crews pitting their oars against each other in an exciting race. There will be a spectator boat following the race; see boat boards for details.
Saturday 27th August
Saturday sees the Round the Island race, organised by the Red Wing Sailing Committee and open to all vessels under sail. The race will be started by the Royal Navy and will sail around St Mary's, finishing on St Agnes. The race starts at 11am. The best vantage points on Tresco will be the south of the island, including Carn Near and Appletree Banks, as well as Appletree Bay. Visitors are very welcome to take part in the event and more information can be obtained through the Tourist Information Centre (01720 424031)
Also taking place on Saturday will be a Maritime Walk around St Mary's with local expert Richard Larn OBE, with tales of mariners, shipwrecks and high jinks, whilst a Children's Pirate Cruise will take place aboard the St Mary's boat Seahorse, with a special cruise, pirate stories, picnic, entertainment and treasure hunt.
Holgates Green on St Mary's will be buzzing between 12 noon and 6pm, with live music, street performers, craft stalls, plus a bar and barbecue provided by the Rotary Club, and the Isles of Scilly Museum will be open between 10am and 12 noon with its dedicated maritime exhibition.
Sunday 28th August
On Sunday 28th August the festival comes to Tresco!
The spectacular Parade of Sail will depart St Mary's harbour at 10:30am and sail out past Star Castle, heading towards Tresco. The spectacle of the flotilla of classic boats sailing through Scilly's crystal clear water will be a site to behold!
Anyone with a sail boat is welcome to take part in the Parade, tripper boats will follow the flotilla for a great view from the water, and Tresco's southern coastline will provide the best vantage point for those watching from dry land.
After the parade, crews will join the Ale Festival at The New Inn.
Also on Sunday there will be the opportunity to visit HMS Sutherland, a Royal Navy Type 23 Frigate, throughout the day. Head to the heart of the ship and marvel at the war capabilities of these incredible vessels, enjoy the capability demonstrations from on-board and imagine yourself the ship’s Commodore as you look out from the bridge. Please note: although free, this is a strictly ticketed event. To book your free ticket click here.
On St Mary's, the RNLI Water Carnival will take place from 3:30 - 5:30pm, with activities on, in and around the water in aid of this wonderful lifesaving charity. The star of the show, Scilly's own lifeboat the RNLB Whiteheads will be on display. Holgates Green on St Mary's will be buzzing with live music, street performers, craft stalls, plus a bar and barbecue provided by the Rotary Club.
Monday 29th August
The final day of the Regatta will see a spectacular finale - a 25-minute aerobatic display by the RAF Red Arrows in the skies above the archipelago, starting at 3pm.
The main display will take place in the channel between St Mary's and Tresco, so anywhere along the southern coast of Tresco will be a perfect spot to spectate.
Also on Monday there will be the opportunity once again to visit the Royal Navy Type 23 Frigate (Please note: although free, this is a strictly ticketed event. To book your free ticket click here), the Isles of Scilly Museum's maritime exhibition (10am - 4:30pm) and shoreside entertainment on St Mary's.
