The Tresco Art Collection

The islands of Tresco and Bryher on the Isles of Scilly are home to a prestigious art collection, gathered with much consideration by Robert and Lucy Dorrien-Smith over many years.

Comprising a mix of 20th Century and British modern art, with fine representations from both the Newyln and St. Ives Schools, the collection features not only some very significant pieces from Ivon Hitchens, Barbara Hepworth, and Rose Hilton but is also a showcase for new rising talent living in the West Country today.

The recent opening of The Flying Boat Club on Tresco has provided the perfect venue for a permanent showcase of this very eclectic collection where Heron, Frost, Denny and Wallis sit comfortably side by side. A visit to the Island Hotel, only a 10-minute stroll from the Club, is an opportunity to view paintings by Mary Fedden, Fred Yates and Julian Trevelyan in perfect surroundings. Wander through the gardens to take in the breath-taking view across the bay to the Eastern Isles and a chance to enjoy the bronze leaping dolphins by David Wynne.

Take a short boat trip to Bryher where the art tour continues at The Hell Bay with Guy Taplin, James Dodds and Roger Hilton's works displayed in public areas, well-lit and accessible for all to savour. Outside the dining room, swooping down onto the grass is a bronze Hunting Bird by Bridget McCrum, and in the inner courtyard stands the steel paintings by Tom Leaper.

For the art lover touring Cornwall, the Tate, Minnack and Eden Project are all the obvious on your itinerary. A trip to Tresco to view what is a very special private collection is also not to be missed.
