Waves, Pipers Hole Tresco by Chris Hankey

Since his introduction at Gallery Tresco in 2007 Chris Hankey has sold 134 paintings – quite an achievement in five short years and a testament to not only his passion and skill, but his appeal to Tresco’s visitors. He is best known for his large works on canvas, using oils thickly to capture the foam of stormy waves crashing onto rocks.

“I seem to be drawn to very particular places where the constant changing weather shapes the environment. It has something to do with boundaries, where the sea and sky meet. Always when painting the sea I try to capture its movement rather than producing a static image. It’s the whole evolution of the wave as it approaches, breaks and dissipates, yet every time it is unique. To really understand you have to be there, you have to paint it there and in doing this there is a sense in which a painting takes on a particular feel or character”

Chris is currently showing at the gallery until 23rd August, but has a collection of work constantly available at Gallery Tresco.

There is an island of uncompromising beauty, hidden away from the tourist's gaze. An island with a temperate climate and beautiful sea - a secluded haven of hills, rocky coves and sandy bays.

A place where you can laze on a deserted beach, rejuvenate in an exclusive spa, sail on sparkling seas, walk the rugged coastline or just relax in the world-renowned Abbey Garden.

The island is Tresco. It's only 28 miles off the Cornish coast and you could be here soon.

Alternatively, stay at the award-winning Hell Bay on Bryher recently listed in the Sunday Times Travel Magazine's Top 100 hotels in the world.
